Critics about Kristen Stewart?s Runaway Performance
SylverBookmark and Share

Positive reviews are pouring in for Kristen Stewart after her latest vehicle The Runaways making the theatres this weekend. And it looks as if she finally succeeds in breaking out of the typically feminine mode of Bella Swan.

In the biopic of the 70s all-chic-band Runaways, Stewart portrays the role of Joan Jett, the lead guitarist of the band. And as for the critics, it appears that her dark look and dark clothes and the devil-may-care attitude have touched the right strings with this generally fussy breed of people.
Here are a few eulogisms directed at Stewart concerning her performance in the film-
* “Kristen Stewart steps out of her normal angsty girl act and nails down the punk rock, hard as nails Jett, and Fanning is equally as good with her disconnected portrayal of Currie …” Kevin Kelly at Cinematical.

* “Ms. Stewart, watchful and unassuming, gives the movie its spine and soul. Cherie may dazzle and appall you, but Joan is the one you root for, and the one rock ’n’ roll fans of every gender and generation will identify with.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

* “Kristen Stewart gets out of Bella mode, and is completely convincing as the young, awkward Joan who’s determined to rock as hard as any guy with her new girl band, The Runaways.” — Bonnie Fuller, HollywoodLife.com

* “While she’s really playing second banana to Fanning, Kristen Stewart makes an excellent Joan Jett.” Chris Bumbray at joblo.com.

The film itself, although doing somewhat poorly in terms of revenues, has managed to attract modest critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic rate it at 63% and critics are generally of the opinion that although the film is not much as an in-depth biopic, as a “conventionally enjoyable making-and-breaking-of-the-band saga,” it feels good. The film’s limited emphasis on the music is one aspect that has received the flak from the critics.
